Edva. Call of the Sea (Part 1)

Day 1. On my way

Finally This day has come…

First sun rays approach to the room. Early morning and alarm clock shouting the same Sunmi’s 24 hours track again and again. I’m feeling like leaving my one home which I don’t really like. Nothing’s holding me here even the memories about this place doesn’t look good. Just pack the stuff and leave. Run away before everybody knows, before everybody wakes up. The time is precious.

Outside the nest

From this very moment I’m on my own. My trip. My language and my experience. Feeling worried and excited at the same time. But the courage is stronger than ever. I have waited for this moment so long. Nothing to regret. It’s time to make it happen.

20140629_120347_HDR

Bus took me to the closest town if I even could give this name to a place which has two main streets and are located in the valley between the mountains. (Jucheon-ri)

On the bus stop an old lady takes care of me instantly. Strangers use to give a hand even if they see you for the first time. What can I say. Just like it as I like to feel secure. Even after more people gather she doesn’t stops to do that.

Another passenger carry two huge boxes of plums and when she offers some for my guardian the first thing she does is fastly turns at me and gives some too. Like a son. Of course giving a short explanation to an owner of the fruits. “he’s a foreigner… let’s give some of fruits to him”

Here is my bus. I didn’t knew this till the moment when I ask the same lady in Korean if this bus goes to next town of my destination. She quickly understands what I mean and just puts her hand in the mid-air by giving a farewell waving followed by a word “Ga.”

I’m on the second bus. It took me to the second town. But just to make it sure I’m constantly checking the maps on my phone. (Jecheon-si)

20140715_094850

I’m in the second town of my destination. About an hour left and I’ll leave for Busan. But first I have to find a bus terminal. Here my phones comes handy again. I already did it on my way here. I’m heading there and of course taking some photos of the building around since I’m a tourist.

20140715_095021

Here I found my self in the terminal. Now I need to buy a ticket but what to use my reading or speaking skills. Tongue took over the eyes and I’m standing at the lady behind the glass who suppose to offer me a ticket. My poor Korean again takes the place in this life performance. “Please give me a bus ticket at 11 o’clock to Busan.” Of course she gives me an answer fast. But this time there is a number in her speach. I had to understand fast but I failed. giving her only one banknote of 10.000 won. But still somehow I was able to understand when she just replies to that. “One more of this please” then just grabed a paper to write the amount but this time I’m faster by giving next banknote first.

20140715_095302

Now when the ticket is in my hand I have some time for deep thought and lunch. Two small buns and a bottle of water serves my as a lunch table this time. Not feeling sad just excited since this moment everything going just fine. I made 2 out of the 3 buses for my trip successfully and I’ almost on my way to Busan.

As I realised later phone is not the best ting to take photos.

Soon… Call of the Sea (Part 2)

Edva. Like day and night

18 days passed since I’m in Korea and around 16 days since I’m in the project site…

Somewhere in the valley

The place I’m stay is really somewhere out of this world. There is only one bus four times a day and if we want to reach a one of the major cities have to take 2 more buses there. The street, if we can call it like that, has only one traffic line and lights during the nighttime every 200 matters. Nothing more to add cause there is nothing more and this is really makes my sad about this place or more like to drives crazy. After two weeks here I started to feel like in video game Stronghold. Only old farmers and flies are living all around despite the fact that kids are coming here every day to study except weekends.

vs pic

The point of this would be that after traveling 9000 kilometers all the way from Europe I haven’t expected such a rural place to live. The fact is this place is only one like that among all other project sites all over Korea since they’re in bigger towns like Samcheok or Yongwol which has easy connection between other cities and even train stations.

In other hand, I pick this project by myself. Was I lucky enough or not time will show but at the moment I can say that experience is experience. I’ll definitely learn something from this and gain new skills.

Other think I’d like to tell about would be people in the center and our host. Nothing bad I can say at the moment. Two weeks are not a big period of time but everybody looks so kind and helpful. I haven’t been living in Korean family but I can say that host and his family are treating us like their own kids no matters that we are just volunteers. They’re also always giving some questions about countries we came from and of course France is more well know than Lithuania but they seems quiet interested in my place too. The other thing about host that he’s really tries to make our life as comfortable as it’s possible. He even bought us bicycles to go around and reach the smallest town of our region in which I can try at least some local snacks. Other people in the center also tries to keep connection no matter they can’t speak english but they’re still smiling and that’s enough for me.

So the point would be that job here is  not hard despite some farm work we have to do and people around are good too but the place which is out of reach from any where makes me sad and disappointed. Two out of seven days a week outside the place won’t make me happy since I came here to see my lovely friends, try some food I have seen only on internet, increase my Korean and feel more confident with it and of course see all that amazing historical and world heritage places. Of course don’t forget spots where Koreans are hanging out during the long night in the major cities like Seoul or Busan.

Just because something doesn’t happening for you right now doesn’t mean that it will never happen…

Edva. Welcome to the temple

Last weekends I had a great opportunity to visit a temple called Guinsa and experience Korean temple stay. It was quiet new thing for me.

Behind the two gates

Temple Guards

Temple Guards in the second temple gate the difference is that only in this temple they’re hidden under the roof

The surrounding of the place also was pretty impressive. Mountains and Korean style architecture buildings all around, of course pretty new since temple suffered from  ferocious flames once but everything still looks very authentic. Despite the main building which looks like an office building for me and yes, there are two elevators inside too since it’s 7 store building.

The main building with two elevators inside

The main building with two elevators inside

The staff and monks of the temple were very kind to us, not suprising cause activity cost us 40.000 won. Two monks and two more staff members took care of us whole time. Only one of the monks and one of staff member spoke english. Beside that experience was pretty good. We also had I quiet good activities too. We have been practicing many ways of meditation, like silent one or walking up the hill. Also temple etiquette and history lesson. In the beginning we also had tour around the temple too.

The main eating hall of the Temple

The main eating hall of the temple

The food was quite good but a bit salty maybe because all of it are grown and prepared inside the temple. Also the fact that there is no difference between breakfast, lunch and dinner in Korea made the experience of temple food almost the same for two days. We also had a tea ceremony at 9 PM first day.

Buildings in the temple are pretty new

Buildings in the temple are pretty new

Most of the food are made inside the temple

Most of the food are prepared inside the temple

In the end I can say that temple stay is something that everybody should try of course every temple can offer a different activities. I’d like to try temple stay one more time. Maybe the same place or another it doesn’t matters the point is have a bunch of good friends around.

Saima. HAPPY 4th OF July!

What is on my mind?

When it is not enough what you have or do, and when is where no ability or right to be sad about it, because where are no one who would come over. This is makes me more strong or to say true dispassionate this mean that I am not influenced by strong emotion and can easily stay calm. If one year ago I was still fighting inside me in stressful situations, now I am so cold, that everything what is happening around cannot do an impact for me. Being emotionally numb. Follow the rule to simply find my shortest answer for everything.  Dead-pan face or fake smiling. I am in competition with myself.  Who is going to win? Can I give up and become a crying person?

100_4486The fast way of life. June.

On the one hand, I look like a person who are sitting in front of his/hers laptop all day long, being online on Facebook, uploading photos, changing status or surfing the web. May I look like interesting, busy and a happy person? Or, am I lack of attention?  How I look like? Do I really care? Yes, not too much, but I am still curious about it. Who is not? What about you?

IMG_3687I am totally a summer person.

The first month of summer pasted really fast. I can easily count hours when I was sitting alone and having nothing to do.  I spend a lot of time with friends. I spend some time with family and I spend some nights with my kitty. I was always on the road if not directly, so definitely on my minds. I am tired, because of this, but at the same time my blood is boiling to take actions and make new plans for the next day. Every day, I am doing and trying something new what should make me happy, but nooo … I am not happy at all and I cannot stay still. I need to do something even it is not what I am looking for.  As I know me I will be active till middle of September when will come a chilly weather and dark days.  On what time, I will start to look for a good place to hide during the hardest period of the year December. Sadly, I am definitely patient.

IMG_34494th of July.

Finally, I got an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day. It was not easy to get in, but with a desire for it all doors are open. There is nothing too much to say about the celebration.  I am sure, that YOU have seen it on TV several times.  All the smiling people dressed up in colors: blue, white and red and waving flags. Kids were playing around and having lots of fun. Everyone are communicating with each another, drinking champagne, eating small treats. Later singing a national anthem, watching fireworks and flying fighters planes. This is what I expected.  A good atmosphere and a good feeling inside me.

usa

Still living and I am here. Making my own decisions. And consulting with myself.

Edva. Spiders, Bees and Frogs

After four days in South Korea. My decision to come on the first day of the project wasn’t that good…

The training and Hongdae

20140626_165443

So many buildings out there

So I finally reached Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. During first two days I had a training about work in children day center with other 14 participants all over the world (France, Finland, Germany, Slovakia). We stayed in a flat in Hongdae which looked like from Korean drama for me. Two days of training took all my time and Seoul were just trapped in a window. So instead of being 7000 kilometers away it was 7 meters away and I couldn’t still get to it! Except these evenings when we got some time to move around Hongdae.

20140625_120658

About Hongdae itself I can say that it’s pretty good place to hangout. So many coffees, restaurants, shops, clubs, bars and much more. During first five hours in Seoul I had an awesome chance to meet my beloved friends there and have a lunch! That was a really enjoyable time, like family reunion (kidding)!

First lunch with friends

Patbingsu! I love it!

Patbingsu! I love it!

During last night in Seoul with participants and only one of my friends we had a chance to experience karaoke too! It was totally new and so interesting. I’d like to come back there again.

Big tree somewhere in Gangwon

My destination is children day center called Kunnamu (Big tree) in area surrounded by mountains and forests. Actually this makes it hard to reach but as I have heard earlier it’s a better place than other care centers in Yeongwol.

20140627_180330

Around the children center

Lots of things happened here for the very first day just after arrival. I got a frog footprints on my t-shirt, other 2 participants and one of the kids were attacked by bees while looking for a missing ball in a draining canal and the same kid brought a giant spider on his leg later while still looking for the same ball (we haven’t found that ball cause nature didn’t want us to).

Soon I’ll write more posts and put more pictures since I have an easy access to internet now.

Ieva. I was on Swedish TV!!!

image

Yeah, the title is true and nothing but true. I was on Swedish TV.  Actually, it was one of the most popular channels in Sweden. And, I guess, the most watched program on it. Sommarlov (summer holidays) on Barnkanalen (kids channel). But I was there and you could even see me. I mean not just as a tiny spot. And… before show started, one of the presenters talked to us. Okay, maybe he talked to Asle and Edgar, but, hey, I was there also! It was fun to see show shooting and everything that stays behind the screen. Crew was amazing – they talked with kids, explained what they are doing, made jokes and obvioulsy enjoyed themselves and their job.

image

After shooting, we went to a huge playground for kids, which was near. I guess it would have been my dreamworld if I were five. Or even ten. But I’m 19 and I felt a little bit… too big. Asle suggested me to take a bus or walk to the centrum. And… I thought that it’s not a bad idea as kids might play for a hour or two and I’d love to spend that time sightseeing instead of waiting. Now it’s time to thank my dad, because I inherited great place understanding and orienteering skills from him. I had no map, no idea where I am and no directions. But I remembered some objects and I thought that we came from west-north. And… well, I could take bus lately (as it’s quite complicated to pay for public transport in Sweden’s cities).

You can’t even imagine how glad I was when I made it to the Tourist Information Center! Glad, proud and excited. It’s great to have a travel companion, but sometimes it’s quite cool to travel alone, take that time that you need… So I took a map (a few actually, as I couldn’t decide which one was the best) and started my own little adventure.

One of the things that I love about Sweden, is order. Not only tidiness of towns and cities, but also the way they are built. It’s very easy to travel there and it’s very hard to get lost (at least I feel so) as everything has a proper order. So I made a simple route (which I had to correct a few times because of rain): Townhall, St. Peter’s church, Lilla Torg, Western Old Town, Castle and it’s park, Malmö Opera and a few other parks that was on my way. Another thing that I love here – parks. They’re on every corner. Literally.

Oh, and I was lucky enough to be 19, which meaned that I could visit Castle for free. That was really great, as I didn’t feel so bad when I bought ice cream and an amazing mix of candies (which, again, costed less than in Lithuania). With lots of chocolate and caramels. Yummy! (Or “Moms!” as Swedes would say).

Rained started just when I came out of the Castle. At first it was okey – no one died from a little bit of summer rain. But it rained, rained and… rained. I was completely wet, so I went to the library. It was a great thing to do. Not only because I love libraries, but mainly because they were selling out old books for only 10 kr! Now I regret buying only one book (as I couldn’t decide between others). Silly, silly me! Especially when they don’t sell old books in, e. g. Höganäs’s or Helgsinborg’s libraries. On the other hand, I have nearly two months left, so maybe I’ll visit Malmö again or find cheap books somewhere else.

When I had enough of Malmö (I was quite tired after exercising on Sunday, I guess), I went to Central Station. I bought ticket just at the time, as train came after few minutes. Everything seemed great – I’ve had a stunning day, saw so many beautiful old buildings (I’m addicted to old things), bought a book and had many sweets with me. It was too good to be true, I guess. So when train’s stop in Landskrona took longer than usually, I wasn’t surprised. At first. But we waited for 5 minutes. 10 minutes. 15. People started to fuss. And then TV on the train (yeah, there are TVs in Swedish trains – and I was using standart class) showed news. It turned out, that there were a bomb risk in one of Göteborg’s trains, so all trains from Göteborg to Copenhagen stopped. And I was lucky enough to be in one of them.

The good thing was that I had my e-book reader and a lot of candies. I missed half of the Sommarlov translation, though, but it was nothing 🙂

SAIMA. I do not care the destination I care the amount of time. Part 2.

The second part dedicated for my passion.  A little bit latter than I planned. I did not write about everything I wanted. My minds were screaming HURRY !!! HURRY !!! HURRY !!! Now, I am calm, because I finished it.

Special and comfortable or only a separate baggage claim area in Samsun-Çarşamba Airport for non-citizens?

The  summer of 2013 was one of the best for me.  Why?  I took a reckless decision in the middle of May, that after my last final exam I am going to project somewhere in the north of Turkey; city called Ordu.  Revising everything for exams and dealing with the project issues;  How well present Lithuania?  What to bring  for Culture Night‘s?  … and worries about buses and planes tickets.  All doubts and thoughts about what the hell I am going to do in next two weeks looks funny now when I remember a teary moment of leaving a magical and a party hard place near Black Sea cost.  Yes, it was a  really real holidays after exams; spending afternoons in boat somewhere in Black sea that you almost can see the cost line; playing football with hot guys from Ordu Football team; learning how to dance salsa during evenings and partying all night long;

photo

But… to reach everything what can Ordu suggest; you will need almost 24 hours of taking several buses and planes.  What a surprise!  In last airport about three-hour away from Ordu a group of tired and sleepy Lithuanians, and a few of another nationality people were sitting near a claim area to take their baggage. Patient Lithuanians were still sitting and hoping while one guy from Germany started to yell at an employees. No reaction from them, because they did not speak in English. Ok.  After sometime we found out about special places for NON-CITIZENS baggage. No matter what kind of flight you had a domestic like us or an international you are going to have an additional check-up for you and for your baggage safety. Still, I cannot get it why the hell they are checking several times?! Whatever, … we have to be safe for an environment.  The airport really small and there was lack of information. I highly recommend for you to choose Trabzon Airport.

samsun

My adventure in Boryspil International Airport.

The  summer of 2013 was one of the best for me.  Again. Why?  I took one more decision, this time I am going again to Turkey, but all by myself.  Istanbul the fifth-largest city in the world and my favorite so far.  In which I feel like in my one`s element.  The knowledge where you can see the best panorama view of Istanbul.  Also,  knowing how to properly use metro lines and ferries.  And, where is the best place to smoke nargile-shisha and play Backgammon.  Oh, and how to slip in the Fenerbahçe football stadium and much more.  Only good memories.  But where is another story behind a week in Istanbul. I am a person who always looking for a plane tickets with transfer flights and an opportunity to visit a new city. This time was Kiev the capital of Ukraine.  And the 8th largest city in Europe?! Leaving Istanbul it was of course sad, but to visit Kiev even having about 5 hours for sightseeing and having a chance to meet my friends was quite OK and in this case not so an unhappy moment.  As I know from my friends before touching the ground of Ukraine the new airport terminal D should have  been  bright, new and shiny.  Probably, it was  new one and so on, but  big or impressed? NOPE!!! But, this is not important at all.  My plane landed. I am waiting in the RIGHT one line to check my passport and to go explore Kiev.  After some time a lady who was working in airport came up to me and said for me in a polite way that I suppose to be waiting in  another line, because I have one more flight at the same day. OK. Well, she is working here and certainly know where I should to wait.  Oh,  and she assured that I will definitely can go from that place for a few hours in the city. Unfortunate, she lied for me …   I was standing in terminal D again; a closed place; working people were not talking in English at all; my poor Russian; sleeping people and playing kids around; and no way to go back; and NO way to go in city; I was totally floundering around until my eyes noticed an elevator!  The elevator for employees, which I used. Ha!  A one man thought that I am an employee and he greeted me, and wished a good day’s work. Later, I found out a few nice people working there who let me to go back . I was standing at the same line, again. The lady who told me before go to another line came up to me again, but this time she was yelling at me that I supposed to be in another line and there is no possibility go to Kiev. I was smarter than she, and I asked people if they can let me to skip a line. They said yes and here I am standing in front of passport control service. I was sure that everything is going to be ‘ok’ and I will run soon away from that lady irate stare.  Yes, I did, but a man working in the passport control did not want to let me go to the city. He was curious what I am going to do in the city  and what I am going to meet. So, I was quite good answering and I understood why he is asking this kind of questions. Sadly, this was only a beginning and he asked for some of his colleges to come and check if my passport is real.  Their were staring at me when looking after my passport. Even, with a magnifier!  And, asking the same questions again and again …  At the very end, they asked to read in Lithuanian. Finally, I get my passport stamped.  I was joyful, but I lost an hour and had to run around city …

The first flight review with the national carrier of Lithuania’s’  airLITUANICA.

IMG_3133

Waking up early in the morning and leaving a cold and empty flat.  This is all about a passion for flying.  I am not joking. I took a flight from Kaunas to Vilnius.  There were a few reasons. First, I have never been in Kaunas airport.  Second, I was curious about the national airlines of Lithuania. Thirdly, the idea about having the shortest flight between biggest cities in Lithuania was really tempting.

Processed with Moldiv

An airplane took only 16 min to fly 92 km. That morning for me to reach Kaunas airport from the flat I am living in; took almost 40 min.  Altitude was around 2,5 km and speed around 450 km/hr. While, average altitude is 9 km and speed around 850 km/hr. Pilots tried to make this flight longer as much as it was possible and more interesting for passengers. And, they definitely did it! I got a chance to see Trakai Island Castle from above! I enjoyed views like the rest of the passengers whose were attached to windows. I must admit, that I had some doubts before a flight, because I was not sure; whether it is worth or not?  But, believe me to take a flight like this is really worth.

Also, I did not expect, but I saw the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. This is a large military plane which belongs to the US Air Force.
